Makita’s Battery Pack Powered Portable Microwave: Nuking on the Go

Finally able to realize my dream of cooking microwaveable meals while camping, Makita has created a portable microwave oven powered by its XGT modular 40-volt battery packs. I originally thought this was a left-over April Fools’ joke, but it’s not – it’s a real product. Hungry-Man Salisbury Steak under the stars, here I come!

The Makita MW001G can produce up to 500W of cooking power for 8 minutes using Makita’s lowest capacity battery or significantly longer (up to 2 hours) using a high capacity battery. If cooking time is beyond 8 minutes, the unit decreases power to 350W for maximum battery life, and Makita estimates a standard battery should be able to heat about 10 lunches or 20 drinks.

Currently only available in Japan, the unit retails for around $540 – which I think we can all agree is a small price to pay for being able to bring microwavable meals camping and not have to worry about melting the plastic dishes trying to heat them over a fire.
