UEFA finally grant medal to former Manchester United manager for Aberdeen’s victory over Real Madrid

Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson will finally receive the recognition he deserves for a superb achievement with a former club.

Ferguson famously led Scottish club Aberdeen to victory over Real Madrid in the final of the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1983.

According to AP News, only the 11 Aberdeen players who started the game and five substitutes received winner’s medals.

However, following a campaign by Aberdeen’s Heritage Trust, European football’s governing body will provide the club with six additional medals.

Former Aberdeen chief executive Duncan Fraser was also involved in the push to see Ferguson rewarded for his efforts in helping the club conquer the Spanish giants.

“It’s a great honour to be receiving this medal and I am grateful to everyone who has worked so hard to make this happen,” said Ferguson.

“Their efforts, along with the cooperation of UEFA, are much appreciated.

“It’s also fantastic to see some of the wonderful people who worked tirelessly behind the scenes during this hugely successful period for the club now being honoured.”

The new medals have been cast from Neil Simpson’s original and will be presented at a special event to be staged at Pittodrie on May 12.

Ferguson broke the dominance of Rangers and Celtic in Scottish football before leading the club to glory in Europe.

He subsequently achieved legendary status with Man United after following through on this promise to ‘knock Liverpool off their perch’ in England.
