HOW predictable of the hand-wringing Left to slam our first asylum barge as “cruel”.
Have they seen it? Decent ensuite bedrooms, well-stocked kitchens, a gym, bar and games room.
Its problem, in fact, is that it is not austere enough on its own to deter illegal arrivals. What MAY, though, is the prospect of being kept aboard 24/7 for months as their asylum claim is heard.
That won’t happen to start with, but it must in the end.
Deterrents work. Look at the deportations deal with Albania which made risky cross-Channel trips futile for its young men.
It HAS slashed their number. The Rwanda agreement will work too once it is allowed to begin.
You will hear a cacophony from the open-borders brigade over this barge.

Met in mire
TWO things are clear from the vast purge at the Met Police.
The first is the extent of the rot.
Hundreds of cops facing sexual or domestic violence allegations. Two hundred reported bullies or sex pests. Another 161 with criminal records.
Ten years of feeble leadership by successive commissioners let this appalling culture flourish.
A culture, remember, not just of criminality but of racism, homophobia and misogyny in the ranks, all of which enabled Wayne Couzens and David Carrick to get away with their evil.
What is also clear, though, from the scale of the internal investigation is new chief Mark Rowley’s absolute determination to rebuild Britain’s biggest force.
It is vital to rethink recruitment and vetting. And fire the guilty without mercy.
Scots’ woe
NICOLA Sturgeon quits. Then her husband is nicked. Police search their bins.
Meanwhile Sturgeon’s replacement Humza Yousaf, a proven dud, is already derided within his own ranks. And Scotland is being governed disastrously.
This is the SNP — the shambolic outfit some independence supporters still trust to lead them out of the UK . . . and into a political and economic quagmire.
Judging by the party’s plummeting membership, though, reality is dawning.
Silly suds
TO cut water use, Whitehall officials float an idea: Ban power showers.
Our negligent water firms waste a trillion litres a year through leaky pipes.
We have built no new reservoirs in three decades despite our population growing by up to half a million a year. Those reservoirs could now be storing the rain from the wettest March in a generation.
To civil servants, though, the problem is YOUR water use.
Talk about a bloody shower.
