Mike Pence will give testimony before federal grand jury convened by special counsel Jack Smith
Mike Pence will reportedly abide by a judge’s order to testify in special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into how Donald Trump attempted to overturn the results of the 2020 election. This follows a Tuesday ruling from a federal appeals court in which efforts by Trump to extend executive privilege to protect former Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and other members of his staff were rejected.
According to NBC News, an adviser to Pence says he will comply with an order handed down under seal last week. Pence had attempted to avoid testimony on an undefined claim of privilege by saying that “no vice president has ever been subject to a subpoena to testify about the president with whom they served."
Before the ruling, Pence had claimed he would take his case to the Supreme Court if necessary. However, it seems that the ruling—which ordering Pence to testify—does carve off some areas surrounding his role in the events of Jan. 6 about which he is not required to speak. Pence’s team considers this a “partial victory.” Or at least it provides enough cover that he’s not bothering to fight the ruling.
But Trump should definitely not be happy about the topics where Pence will be testifying.
