Man Utd keeper David de Gea in contention for EPL Golden Glove

0

The Premier League’s top goalkeepers go head-to-head to determine the recipient of the prestigious Golden Glove accolade by the conclusion of the 2022/23 season.

Liverpool star Alisson and Manchester City number one Ederson shared the prize last season, having racked up 20 clean sheets each, as the two sides battled it out for the title until the final weekend.

The Reds shot-stopper had the upper hand after spending fewer minutes between the sticks, but he will miss out on this season’s nomination due to the Merseysiders’ dreadful campaign.

With Liverpool and Man City running the show in the Premier League across the past few years, it’s no wonder either Alisson or Ederson have won the Golden Glove in the last four seasons.

However, only two of the last 11 Golden Glove recipients have won the Premier League title that same season, a trend that will likely continue in 2022/23.

Although Manchester United can hope to secure a top-four finish at best, the long-serving stalwart David de Gea is in contention to win the award for the first time since 2017/18 as we approach the run-in.

The Premier League keeps track of goalkeepers with the most clean sheets to their name, with Newcastle United’s Nick Pope leading the charge with 13 shutouts.

But the Red Devils’ No 1 is only one behind, the same as Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale, who’s aiming to become the first keeper since Ederson in 2020/21 to win the Premier League and Golden Glove in the same season.

De Gea is no stranger to lifting the coveted prize after he became the first Man United stopper to win the award since Edwin van der Sar in 2008/09, doing so five years ago.

It took the Spaniard 18 clean sheets to beat the competition that season, and he may have to replicate that feat this term if he’s to dethrone Pope, who has had a phenomenal campaign.

Despite going toe-to-toe with the Englishman at the top of the Golden Glove charts, the 32-year-old, who impressed in Man Utd’s 2-0 loss at Newcastle last weekend, has ‘only’ made 76 saves this season.

By contrast, Brentford’s David Raya, who has amassed nine clean sheets, leads the charts with a whopping 121 stops as one of only two Premier League keepers to have hit a 100-save landmark in 2022/23.

United host Everton this weekend where De Gea will be expected to keep a clean sheet – and with 10 games to play he will need to be at his best to pull ahead of his Newcastle rival.
