Sports briefs: Novato rides big inning to win against Tam
The Novato High baseball team put together an eight-run third inning then held off Tam for an 11-8 victory on Thursday.
Leadoff hitter Evan Black had three hits, drove in two and scored twice for the Hornets. Andy Gates drove in three runs and Jacob Rabb had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored.
The eight-run outburst gave Novato (10-5, 5-4 MCAL) a 9-1 lead but Tam (9-8, 8-3) immediately responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Novato tacked on two more in the fourth to go in front 11-5.
Colin Lam and Charlie Blau had two hits apiece for the Red-tailed Hawks.
- John Holtz hit a grand slam to lead San Marin to a 5-2 win against Berean Christian on Thursday. Holtz’s blast came in the bottom of the fifth and put the Mustangs (10-7) ahead 5-0. David Skaggs started on the mound and tossed five innings of one-hit ball.
- Rex Solle homered, had two hits, drove in three runs and scored twice to lead Redwood to a 5-1 victory against Foothill on Thursday. Theo Trono also had a pair of hits and scored two runs for the Giants (13-2). Redwood starter Rory Minty went seven innings, allowing five hits and one earned run while striking out five.
- Jayden Lee tripled, drove in a run and came around to score in the third inning as Marin Catholic fell to Oak Ridge 3-2 on Thursday. Starting pitcher Gavin Simurdiak went six innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs. MC (11-4) was limited to three hits.
College baseball
Lucas Schaefer hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning to lead College of Marin to a 5-1 win against Laney on Thursday. Former Novato High standout Jake Tirk pitched six innings to earn the victory. Joey Taddie reached base four times with two hits and a pair of walks. COM (15-15, 8-3 Bay Valley) has won 11 of its past 14 games to move back to .500 on the season.
Prep swimming
Bryden Thielenhaus posted wins in the 200 free and the 100 fly to pace the Novato boys to a 95-73 victory against Redwood on Thursday. Nick Scruton secured wins in the 100 free and 500 free for the Giants.
Redwood came away with the victory on the girls side, led by Mia Kelly with wins in the 200 free and 100 back. Lera Bondarenko won the diving. Emerson Wunderlach won both freestyle sprints for the Hornets.
Boys volleyball
Archie Williams took a big step toward securing second place in the standings with a 27-25, 25-20, 25-16 win against Redwood on Thursday. Zach Wulff had a team-high 17 kills for the Peregrine Falcons (7-1 MCAL) and Alex Lucich had 26 assists. Middle blockers Charlie Butler and Kaleb Simmons played strong defense, according to head coach Greg Jones. Both teams entered the game with one loss in league.
- Yassen Ashraf had 26 assists, two aces and a block as Tam overcome a sluggish start to stay unbeaten in league following a 25-22, 25-12, 25-13 win against Terra Linda. Will hatch added 10 kills and three blocks for Tam (17-2, 9-0).
Boys golf
Charlie Farrell carded a 1-under-par 35 at Marin Country Club, pacing Branson in a 184-274 win against Novato. Aria Saluja and Barry Liu both added 36s for the Bulls (10-2).
- Truman Ashforth took medalist honors with a 38 on the front nine at Meadow Club as Marin Catholic improved to 7-1 in league play following a 201-297 win against San Rafael.
Boys tennis
All eyes were on the No. 1 singles match between Jack Millar and Henry Pratt as Marin Catholic and Archie Williams battled it out on Thursday. Millar pulled out the win to lift the Wildcats to a 4-3 victory. MC also got singles wins from Qas Vidyarthi and David Shepherd at Nos. 3 and 4 singles, respectively. Johan Jacobs won at No. 2 singles for the Peregrine Falcons.
- Ollie Weston and Lukas Berger picked up wins in the top two singles matches to lead Redwood to a 6-1 win against Novato on Wednesday. Indie Stanic pulled out a competitive match at No. 3 singles for Novato, 4-6, 7-5, 10-6, against Jackson Adams.
- Witt Bulger picked up the victory at No. 1 singles as Tam swept by San Marin 7-0 on Thursday.
