Large fire burning in Jersey City

0

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (PIX11) — A large, six-alarm fire at a recycling facility in Jersey City caused service disruptions on the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Tuesday, according to officials.

The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail is skipping the Richard Street station due to the fire, according to the NJ Transit's website. HBLR service is also suspended between Liberty State Park and the 45th Street Station.

Massive billows of smoke could be seen pouring from the city’s skyline. Video from the AIR11 chopper showed firefighters dousing water on several areas of the facility that had gone up in flames.

The fire is also impacting traffic on the New Jersey Turnpike, according to the City of Jersey City Twitter account. Drivers should avoid the Turnpike area at Garfield and Bayview Avenues. Motorists are being diverted off the Turnpike.

The warmer weather, low humidity, and breezy winds in New Jersey on Tuesday pose an increased risk of brush fires that can quickly spread. The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag warning for much of the tri-state area through at least 7 p.m.

“A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and dry fuels will create a significantly elevated fire growth potential,” the weather service said in a weather advisory.
