MANY Brits have seen a some snowfall first thing today with even Devon being hit – and the Met Office has warned more is on the way and 70mph winds.

A band of low pressure from the Atlantic is bringing with it some very unsettled weather as it moves across the country with many parts suffer strong winds, heavy downpours and low temperatures.

Forecasters at the weather centre say Scotland has seen some snow in the higher regions this morning although it also added there had been a dusting of the white stuff as far south as Dartmoor.

More snow is on the way later today with North Wales also expected to be hit, the Met Office predicted.

However, it added the snow was unlikely to stick around as rain will be sweeping in later.

The Met Office has forecast a period of unsettled weather for the coming days and currently has a yellow weather warning in place which covers a large part of southern England.

The warning is currently in place for most of today and covers most of south west England, stretching north up the Welsh coast as well as covering all of England’s southern coast and Kent.

As well, there is a similar warning for strong winds which covers all of Northern Ireland.

Forecasters at the Met Office predict gusts of wind could hit a maximum of 70mph in the more exposed coastal regions.

Due to the high winds the Met Office has warned about the possibility of travel chaos and disruption.

It says: “Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely.

“Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer.

“Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely.

“Some short-term loss of power and other services is possible.

“It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves.”

Areas further north and to the east are expected to see sunny spells mixed in with scattered showers, the Met Office says.

That rain though is likely to become more widespread, frequent and heavier as the day wears on.

Rain is also expected in northern Scotland where the Met Office is also expecting to see a scattering of snow in the higher areas.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Matthew Lehnert, said: “Thick cloud and heavy rain will continue to push in from west bringing 50 to 60mph winds along western coasts.

“Snow is likely to fall over parts of upland Scotland overnight.

“Some disruption due to strong winds is likely on Wednesday, especially in southern and western areas, as well as the potential for heavy rainfall and even some snow, though the latter probably confined to high ground in the north.

“It will be another cool day with temperatures of 7 to 10C in the west, with 11 to 13C possible in the southeast, however it will feel colder in the strong winds.”

Overnight, temperatures will be chilly once again, the experts say, although the rain or showers will be confined to central areas and some norther parts.

Clearer spells will develop in the south  and the strong winds in the west and south will start to ease.

Many parts of the UK though will see showers once again on Thursday which will turn heavy at times.

Southwestern regions will see the best of the sunshine as the area becomes drier.

Overall, most parts will be less cold and less windy.
