Alice Lloyd College Holds Annual Honors Day Awards Ceremony
Alice Lloyd College held its annual Honor’s Day celebration on Tuesday, April 11th, in the Estelle Campbell Center for the Arts auditorium. This convocation is dedicated to honoring students for their exceptional achievements in academics. Numerous awards were given out for student excellence in various majors. Additionally, awards for special achievements made by students in various organizations and community service projects were also announced during the ceremony.
The celebration began with an invocation by Philip Bentley, followed by a song from the Voices of Appalachia Choir. President Jim Stepp then welcomed the assembly and praised the ALC Students for their academic success. President Stepp then introduced the Roop family and Mission of Hope guests to the audience. President Stepp recognized the Roop family’s contributions to Alice Lloyd College and its youth leaders before naming the Estelle Campbell Center for the Arts auditorium ‘Roop Auditorium’. Following President Stepp’s address, Mission of Hope Executive Director David Heatherly made a special presentation to Alice Lloyd College and President Jim Stepp.
Dr. Charles Marshall then delivered an introduction to the Honor’s Day awards ceremony and handed the program over to Emcee Dr. Sara Pitts to begin the awards. Alice Geddes Lloyd Servant Leadership Award– The Alice Geddes Lloyd Servant Leadership Award is an award that students can earn by completing our formal leadership education program. This program consists of several components the student must complete, including Complete Leadership 101 and Freshman Transitions 101, attend 4 leadership seminars offered through the convocation program, attend 4 leadership workshops offered on campus each year, and complete 40 hours of community service. If you are interested in registering for this program, please contact Dr. Pollard. Nine students have completed the requirements of the program this year. Katherine Anne Haigler Memorial Award– The Katherine Anne Haigler Memorial Award was established to honor the memory of Kathy Haigler. Before she lost her battle with cancer Kathy was a social worker who dedicated her life to helping others. This award honors her memory by providing financial assistance to a female student seeking to further her education in the field of social work. This year’s award goes to Kendra Casey.

Judy Ann Howard Memorial Award– The Alice Lloyd College Student Government Association originated the Judy Ann Howard Memorial Award in 1987 in an effort to have an on-going tribute to Judy Howard. The SGA awards this honor to the male or female sophomore student with a GPA of 3.5 or better who has exhibited good character, personality, leadership ability, and an involvement in extra-curricular activities while maintaining a commitment to his/her total collegiate goals.

Sharlee Wright Memorial Award– The Sharlee Wright Memorial Award was established by the Student
Government Association in an effort to honor Sharlee Wright, a junior Social Science major, from Knott County. Sharlee was active in extracurricular activities, including SGA, and was an above average student. She passed away in 2008, during her junior year at ALC. This award is given to a junior with a GPA of 3.0 or better.
