Man United confirms Lisandro Martinez season is over, Varane out for a few weeks
Lisandro Martinez looked utterly distraught after going to ground without anyone around him against Sevilla in the Europa League quarter-final first leg on Thursday.
Manchester United have confirmed that Martinez will miss the rest of the season after fracturing a metatarsal bone in his foot.
The Premier League giants added that his defensive partner Raphael Varane ‘is expected to be out for a few weeks’.
The former Real Madrid defender was hauled off at half-time against Sevilla due to a foot injury.
Varane and Martinez had formed a robust partnership at the back under Erik ten Hag.
Their performances have left Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof warming the bench for most of the campaign.
United fans will be hoping that Varane receivers from his injury. They are aiming for a top-four finish in the league and in contention for the FA Cup and Europa League.
The long-term injuries to the World Cup-winning duo will put a huge dent in United’s hopes of concluding the season on a high.
Erik ten Hag wants his defenders to be proactive and comfortable with the ball on their feet.
Maguire and Lindelof struggle with this aspect of the game, but the onus is on them to show they are good enough to stay at Old Trafford next season.
