Sunny spells and dry weather are finally on the way after a wet, windy and cold start to the year.

Met Office spokesman Stephen Dixon said: “Things are due to settle down for many areas.

“The theme for next week is it’ll be mostly dry with temperatures above average and locally well above average in some spots.

“After what’s been an unsettled spell, it will finally feel like we are getting into the later part of spring, towards more of a summery regime.

“The temperatures will feel quite pleasant.”

The meteorologist said the warmest temperatures are likely to be in eastern and some northern regions sheltered by high ground, where it could reach the “high teens and possibly low 20s Celsius”.

And the warm weather is set to continue – with forecasters predicting it will continue into next month.

The Met Office’s long-range forecast reads: “Temperatures likely rather warm to warm towards the end of the month, especially in the west and northwest.”

It comes as bookies have slashed their odds on April turning out to be the hottest on record.

Having been a 6/1 shot earlier this week, they have now made it just 4/1.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “We may be in for a wet weekend, but it’s all change after that on the weather front, and there’s an outside chance we see a record-breaking hot April as a result.”
