While India's total lithium-ion imports rose to $2.31bn in April 2022-January 2023, of which 75% were from China, the discussions have gained significance in the wake of China's reported plans to prohibit exports of certain rare-earth elements and high-performance magnets used in EV motors. To reduce industry dependency on China, senior officials have said that India should explore other green energy sources to power its future vehicles.
