I ditched Aldi for M&S to buy my food shop & was blown away by how cheap things were – & the quality was loads better
A FOODIE was pleasantly surprised after ditching Aldi and doing her weekly grocery shop in Marks & Spencer.
For many, Marks & Spencer is not the first store to spring to mind when it comes to shopping on a budget – but as one TikTok user, @lux_island, proved, the retailer is not as expensive as people may reckon.
The delighted shopper took to TikTok to inform fellow foodies about the bargain deals, some of which were cheaper than rival Aldi.
The first item Lux picked up was a pack of microwave rice that was 65p – and although it was a tad bit more expensive than other stores, the price difference was not too great.
A kilogram of basmati rice, she revealed in her video, retailed for £2.40, which was a similar deal to Aldi.
Next, whilst browsing around the store, the shopper nabbed one bottle of iced coffee.
Compared to Aldi, where it scans for around £2, Marks & Spencer asks just £1.50 – and not only it’s cheaper, Lux also reckoned the taste was better.
”That’s an absolute steal,” the shopper told her 42.4k followers on the platform.
In terms of dairy, Lux also couldn’t stop raving about the British medium cheddar cheese, which she bagged for £2.90.
”Again, it’s about 20 or 30p more than Aldi. And we had it last night – and it was banging, really nice cheese.”
There was also a vast array of flavourful yoghurts – and the price difference was minimal, the shopper noted.
”Now, the frozen veg was very good price and again, very similar to Aldi and other major supermarkets.”

Last but certainly not least, Lux also checked out the shelves to see if there were any treats for her pet – and she was blown away by how ”reasonably priced” they were.
Fellow Marks & Spencer fans on the app flocked to comments to share their thoughts and praise the retailer for the quality of the food.
One said: ”That rice is cheaper than tesco and better quality than aldi. Win win.”
Another wrote: ”Thanks for the videos lovely! Literally gonna do a trial shop you’ve inspired me.”
Lux is not the first one to rave about the popular British retailer – recently one money-saving shopper, Kathryn Leech, listed the seven products to always buy at M&S.
These, she revealed, included eggs, bran flakes, milk, custard creams and others.
Kathryn's five tips to help you slash the bill
- Shop the reduced section
These are often products that are going out of date but that doesn’t mean they’re bad quality! You can find quite a few great bargains in the reduced section.
- Use Scan and Go
If your supermarket has one, use it! This helps you to keep track of your spending as you go and means there’ll be no surprises at the checkout. You can also remove things if you change your mind.
- Bigger pack, better value
Make sure you check out the price label on the shelf as often a bigger pack is better value for money than a smaller one. Do this for products that have a long sell by date such as tea bags, saving you money in the long term.
- Shop own brand
Own brands are always cheaper than branded ones. Sometimes the own brand products are actually the same as a branded version, it’s just in different packaging. Have a look at the ingredients and see for yourself.
- Get the app
Every supermarket has their own app and I’d urge you to get every single one. You get personalised offers, discounts and coupons, helping to slash that food bill.
