I’m a pro dog trainer & there are three dangerous toys all pet owners should avoid and why tennis balls are a big no
IF you love to throw a tennis ball for your dog to retrieve, then you may just want to think again.
A professional dog trainer, who regularly shares her expert advice under the acronym @toppawk9s, has revealed the three dangerous dog toys that all pet owners should steer clear of.
In the clip shared to TikTok, she begins by urging: “Stop buying there three super common dog toys.”
First up on her list may be the biggest surprise of all – the tennis ball.
“These are actually very dangerous for dogs,” she says.
“This green stuff – a lot of dogs like to pick off and eat and ingest and it can cause a lot of stomach issues and intestinal issues.”
Next up is the ‘Benebone’ wishbone chew toy.
“These things are so extremely hard they can easily crack teeth,” she warns.

Finally, she notes that all dog owners should avoid purchasing any rope toy.
“The reason these are bad is because when they start to fray, dogs will accidentally or purposely ingest the rope,” she explains.
“This can, in turn, result in an intestinal blockage.”
She adds it can result in surgery costing £3k and up.
The dog expert then moves onto discuss the dog toys she does recommend purchasing – starting with a ball with a hole in it.
“The reason for this is because if it does get stuck in your dog’s throat, it doesn’t block their airway,” she says.
The professional dog trainer also suggests buying a ball that’s plain on the outside, which has no fabric type of texture on it, or a ball that’s too big to get stuck in their throat at all.
She continues: “And a ball that any type of tall that has fun texture and grooves on the outside that you can put stuff in and they can just chew on to clean their teeth.”
The post has since gone viral, racking up over 1.2 million views and several comments from social media users.
“Every time you come up on my feed I just start taking notes,” wrote one.
A second penned: “Can you show more options? My dog chews up everything and tennis ball and ropes are his favourite toys.”
A third quipped: “You’re coming with me to explain to my pup why she shouldn’t be chewing on her benebones.”
Meanwhile, a fourth noted: “I used to play tug of war with my 2 dogs with a rope thingy.”
Another added: “Not me literally watching my dog play with his tennis ball as this passes on my fyp.”
And a further chimed in: “I used to have a tennis ball for my dog, he loved it but I ultimately threw it away because of the green things.”
