€22m-rated defender insists he is "happy" at Manchester United - report

0

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has credited his resurgence at Manchester United to Erik ten Hag.

The former Crystal Palace man played just four minutes before the winter break, but an injury to Diogo Dalot gave him a chance to showcase what he brings to the team.

Ten Hag wants his full-backs to contribute heavily in attack. This is not something Wan-Bissaka is known for.

However, the detailed instructions from the Dutchman have helped the defender to improve the attacking side of his game massively.

In a recent interview with The Telegraph, Wan-Bisska accepted that he was worried about his game time in the first half of the season.

He said: “It has been my intention to stay, but during that period (out of the team) my aim was just to play, everyone loves playing and it makes me happy. During that time I would do anything to play again.”

“I am happy here, I have been happy since I joined and that is what I worked for and what I continue to work for.”

He also outlined what Ten Hag wants him to do to keep his place in the team.

He added: “I think it’s getting involved more in the higher part of the pitch, which is what the manager wants.”

“He wants the full-back and winger to be on opposite lines, so if one is outside, the other is inside. It gives more options for other players. It creates space for other areas of the pitch.”

Aaron Wan-Bissaka is still fighting to save his Man United career

The 25-year-old is a sensational one-on-one defender. He showed his class by getting the better of Allan Saint-Maximin in the Carabao Cup final.

His last-ditch scoop tackle against Wilfried Zaha in the Premier League this season was another example of how spectacular he is in defending.

However, modern football demands full-backs to not only defend but attack as well.

Ten Hag wants his full-backs to support the wingers by overlapping them or by taking positions in midfield.

Wan-Bissaka has shown significant improvement over the past four months. He often takes central positions, allowing Antony to run through the flank.

The €22 million-rated defender has been in and around the opponent’s box when possible to give his teammates an additional option to pass.

Having said that, United might find a more attacking right-back in the transfer market. One such player is Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong. The Red Devils have already confirmed their interest in signing the 22-year-old as revealed by Fabrizio Romano.

Wan-Bissaka still has the onus to convince Ten Hag that he is the correct man to take up the right-back role at Man United. The remaining games of this season will be a test for the full-back to save his United career.
