Khalilzad Welcomes UNSC Resolution on Afghanistan
The Former US special envoy for Afghanistan reconciliation, Zalmay Khalilzad, welcomed the UN Security Council resolution condemning the ban on Afghan women and girls in Afghanistan.
Khalilzad said the resolution “Reflects the global aspiration for Afghanistan, especially for Afghan women and girls.”
He also said that based on the international and Islamic edicts, women have the right to education and work.
Khalilzad recommended for the international community produce a road map for engagement with the Taliban.
“It is also vital that the international community work to produce a road map for engagement with Afghanistan. The UN meeting in Doha next week is an opportunity to do so after the passage of this resolution,” he tweeted.
On Thursday, the UN Security Council unanimously condemned the Taliban administration’s ban on Afghan women working for the UN in Afghanistan. It urged the leaders of the Taliban to “swiftly reverse” the restrictions against women’s and girls’ rights.
On Thursday, the UN Security Council members voted to accept the resolution, which Japan and the United Arab Emirates drafted.
