Her relatives are understood to have pulled her out of the sea while witnesses phoned the emergency services.
Local police, Red Cross workers and Civil Guard officers were called to the scene at about 2pm this afternoon.
The emergency crews tried to revive her but she was later pronounced dead at the scene.
The Brit is believed to 76-years-old, it was reported.
It is unclear if she suffered from health problems, which caused her to collapse.
It comes after a 62-year-old British man drowned off a beach at a popular holiday resort on Spain’s Costa Brava at the weekend.
He was found lifeless in the water following a search by emergency responders including police and paramedics.
A woman is said to have raised the alarm after he failed to return from a swim at a beach in the attractive resort of Calella de Palafrugell in the north-east province of Girona close to Spain’s border with France.
He had gone for his swim at Sant Roc cove, a residential area of the town surrounded by a beautiful setting of rocks, cliffs and old fishermen’s cottages.
Last month a British man also drowned in front of his son in Tenerife.
The unnamed 58-year-old was pulled out of the sea by two people said to include a nurse who performed CPR on him after he went into cardiac arrest while they waited for emergency responders to arrive.
The emergency responders continued to try to revive him after reaching the scene, near the Punta de Teno lighthouse at the northwestern tip of Tenerife, but there was nothing they could do to save him.
