The Indian Supreme Court will review petitions on May 9 challenging an earlier verdict upholding the Centre's decision to provide 10% reservation in government jobs and educational institutions to Economically Weaker Section (EWS). The Constitution's 103rd Amendment Act was upheld by a 3:2 majority in November, which granted EWS reservations. The appeals were filed by the DMK and Madhya Pradesh Congress leader Jaya Thakur, who both challenge the amendment's constitutional validity. The review petitioners stated that the impugned constitutional amendments are ultra vires as they alter the basic structure of the Constitution of India.
