Chippy hailed as ‘cheapest in the UK’ as hungry visitors praise friendly restaurant ‘off the beaten track’
A CHIPPY has been hailed as the cheapest in the UK after hungry Brits discovered the secret restaurant “off the beaten track”.
“Blackpool’s hidden gem” proudly offers huge portions of “top class” fish and chips at the best prices – with “kids’ meals for a quid.”
Tower Fisheries, located on Topping Street, Blackpool, has been drawing customers from across the country, as word spreads about it’s famously cheap and tasty grub.
As inflation rises and prices soar, it may not be shocking to learn the average cost of a fish and chip takeaway will set you back £11.05.
Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers, told The Sun that chippies had been battered by a perfect storm of rising costs including a trebling of energy bills and a 35 per cent tariff on fish sourced from Russia.
And, poor potato harvests have doubled the cost of a sack of spuds from £8 to £16.
At a time when families across the nation are trying to save the pennies, this chippie comes recommended “without hesitation” by many impressed customers.
Many positive TripAdvisor reviews claim Tower Fisheries is the best value for money in the seaside town.
One person wrote: “Amazing prices lovely, tasty food and the couple who have run the place for 28 years are so friendly.
“Definitely Blackpool’s hidden gem.”
Another commented: “Top class food, great portion. Price how it should be. Great staff.
“Owner friendly and chatty, all round great chippy. Definitely be there again.”
“Whenever I’m in Blackpool I always call in this chippy for lunch. Super friendly owners, decent portions and very cheap,” added a happy customer.
They continued: “You can get stung in Blackpool for fish & chips.
“If you aren’t familiar with Blackpool it can be a bit off the beaten track, down one of the back roads.”
One family said they ordered chips, mushy peas, gravy, bread and a cup of tea all for £6.50.
Yet another five star reviewer, who would “recommend without hesitation”, explained their fish, chips, peas, bread, butter and tea was just £5.50 – and they offer “kids’ meals for a quid.”
This value for money comes at a much needed time for many across the UK, as recent reports revealed food inflation hit a 45-year high of 19.2 per cent in March.
But, not all chippies are opting for the same approach as Tower Fisheries.
One woman was forced to fork out an eye-watering £50 for her meal – and she claimed it was the cheapest item on the menu.
Sharon Heppenstall was travelling the NC500 with her sister Sue when they stopped at the Kylesku Hotel in Sutherland.
The pair ordered two glasses of wine plus two portions of the fish and chips.
And the 55-year-old said ordered the fish and chips because it was the cheapest thing on the menu.
The dish came with two little bits of chips, a handful of peas and about eight chips stacked in a jenga like tower.
The total cost of the meal came to an eye-watering £71.75 including £49.90 for the fish and chips, £12 for a glass of Pinot Grigio and £9.25 for a glass of Malbec.
It is safe to say this restaurant’s take on the iconic British dish did not make the list of Britain’s Best Chippies.
The prestigious award sees chippies across the country battling it out for top prize each year.
Ranked number-one in the Fish & Chip takeaway of the Year award was Whitehead’s Fish & Chips in Hornsea, Yorkshire.
But Belfast is home to the number-one rated Fish & Chip Restaurant of the Year.
Fish City stole the title, just a stone’s throw away from the capital’s historic waterfront.
