Four nifty ways to show your kids that saving money can be child’s play
IF the kids are putting a dent in your thrifty habits, show them that saving money can be child’s play.
By setting some easy challenges and fun games, they will soon catch on.
SAVE YOUR ENERGY: Kids love friendly competition, so give them tasks that will save you money at the same time.
These could include taking a shorter shower before a four-minute egg timer runs out, turning off the taps when they brush their teeth, switching the lights out, and turning devices off standby.
They get a point for ticking off every task, and you can give them a reward at the end of the week for all their hard work, such as extra pocket money or a movie night.
MAKE A MEAL OF IT: If the children are asking for another expensive takeaway, turn the tables and get them to make a fun family fakeaway instead.
Set a budget, decide on a theme such as Mexican or Chinese, then all muck in to make the recipes together.
You will find loads of dishes on supermarket websites, including katsu curry, at realfood.tesco.com.
Decorate the table and dress up for an occasion they will remember for much longer than a takeaway.
YOUNG FINDS: Kids have lots of skills they can put to good use to save you money.
Youngsters could create DIY birthday cards that will mean so much more than shop-bought versions.
You can get older children to use their tech skills to find money-saving tips online.
Set a challenge of researching deals or finding big-ticket items for less.
SALE AWAY: Why not load up the car with unwanted items and take a pitch at a car boot sale?
Give your children a section of the stall for their own treasures and get them to keep a tally of the sales.
They can keep their own profits, while you bank yours.
For once, you might come home from a day out with more money than you left with!
