New Haven police investigating fatal shooting of 45-year-old man
New Haven police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 45-year-old man on Friday morning.
Officers responded to Congress Avenue, near Vernon Street, at about 6:35 a.m. and found a man, later identified as Ji’Tu Garrett of Meriden, who had been shot, according to the New Haven Police Department.
Police said Garrett was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital and died of his injuries shortly thereafter.
Detectives from the NHPD Major Crimes Unit and Bureau of Identification responded to the scene to interview any possible witnesses and collect evidence, according to police.
Police said the incident appears to have stemmed from a dispute, according to preliminary investigations.
“We are actively investigating this incident and are asking anyone with any information to come forward and contact the police department,” said New Haven Chief Karl Jacobson. “This type of gun violence is unacceptable, and we’re committed to finding those responsible and bringing them to justice.”
