For the ninth time in nine months, the law enforcement community and Canadians are mourning the loss of yet another police officer killed in the line of duty. Ontario Provincial Police officer Sgt. Eric Mueller was shot while responding to a disturbance at a home in Bourget on Thursday. A journalist on the scene described the complaint that the OPP officers responded to as a “routine noise complaint." As a practitioner in the public safety domain for the last 48 years — 33 as a proud RCMP member — I can safely say that for any police officer, “routine” is your enemy.
