Pompey finished eighth in the league table, seven points behind last place in the playoffs and they are already focused on strengthening their team to challenge for promotion next season.

Portsmouth’s 2022/23 season was riddled with injuries and the Fratton Park outfit are determined to recruit players based on their past injury issues to minimise the injury risk.

Hughes also stated their strategy to find ways to help players through sports science and medicines to prevent long-term injuries.

And the Pompey sporting director also gave the example of Towler, who joined in January and was instructed by the club’s medical department to do Pilates to keep himself fit.

Hughes believes that it is the job of the club to provide their players with assistance to aid their development.

“Part of the wider strategy is helping improve sports science, medicine, and also that baseline of players having an understanding of what they need to help them”, Hughes told The News.

“Ryley Towler is a great example, he does Pilates because it helps him.

“So it’s finding out what these players like, what we can help them with, and what they need to be successful.

“That’s our job, as a club we must try to provide that.”

Portsmouth have already parted ways with eight players and are in for a summer overhaul.
