Cruise ship horror as passenger dies swimming off ‘haunted’ Mystery Island on dream voyage
A CRUISE ship passenger has died after swimming close to the shores of the “haunted” Mystery Island.
The traveller was amid a dream voyage in Vanuatu when the tragedy struck.
The person was reportedly on board a cruise ship that left Sydney, Australia, on May 15, which was touring through the Pacific Ocean.
Carnival Australia confirmed that the Carnival Splendor passenger died on Mystery Island.
A spokesman for the cruise line said: “Carnival Cruise Line is deeply saddened by the death of a guest on Mystery Island, following what appears to be a medical situation whilst swimming.
“Our Care Team are supporting the guest’s family along with other guests during this difficult time.”
A person on board the ship told 7NEWS the passenger died while snorkelling.
The ship was on a nine day trip around the south pacific and is due to arrive back in Australia tomorrow.
The picturesque destination’s official name is Inyeug, however, tourists call it Mystery Island after folklore suggested it was haunted by spirits.
