BBC Breakfast’s Nina Warhurst gives heart-breaking update on dad amid dementia battle
BBC Breakfast presenter Nina Warhurst has shared an emotional post on social media updating her fans on her dad’s current health struggles.
The morning TV show host has been open about her father’s ongoing battle with dementia and, in a recent post, shared a heart-warming snippet into their lives as the disease takes a ‘tighter grip’ on her dad.
Since her father, Chris, was diagnosed with dementia last year, Nina has spoken openly about its toll on her and the family while remaining optimistic and sharing candid photos of the pair.
The 42-year-old BBC Breakfast presenter posted two black-and-white images on Instagram over the weekend showing her 20,000 plus followers the good and the bad.
The soon-to-be mum-of-three captioned the images: “Here’s what we Warhurst’s love more than anything. 1/ Eating, 2/ Talking about eating, 3/ Laughing at ourselves for how much we love talking about eating.”
The first image shows Chris dining with a coffee and a cake, and the second is the pair of them looking at the camera and Nina pulling a playful expression and raising one eyebrow.
The caption continued: “Dementia is tightening its grip quite quickly now. Dad is losing some basic skills and is increasingly reluctant to go out.
“But we can still make each other laugh out loud in a cafe by raising an eyebrow and delivering deadpan reviews of cinnamon swirls vs tiffin cake and discussing whether it’s *ever* appropriate to heat coronation chicken.”
She thanked the coffee shops that the duo frequent together for their father-daughter time, praising the staff at Costa Coffee, Subway, McDonald’s, and Sainsbury’s.
Nina added: “A tiny bit of patience and empathy from staff goes a long way in giving families living with dementia the confidence to keep venturing out (and trying new cake/ toastie combos if I must).
“BTW it’s tuna melt & rocky road 4EVA for me. Cheese toastie & cinnamon swirl for him. But our research will continue.”
The post received an outpour of love and support from followers, with many applauding her and her family’s strength while sharing stories of how dementia has impacted their lives.
BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One.
