Someone actually lit their money on fire by betting on the A's to win the World Series

Look, I won’t deny you. Like many of us, I, too, am not immune to the occasional awful online purchase.

Did I really need that commemorative The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom poster? What about my latest pair of Allbirds slipper shoes (they’re so dang comfy but wear out so easily!) in as many months? Probably not. But I wanted them, and that’s what, unfortunately, often comes first. I’m a weak man. I’ll readily admit it.

With that said, for the life of me, I can’t understand this bettor who put $100 on the Oakland Athletics to win the World Series before the 2023 MLB season even started. I mean, I know the payout might be $50,000, and it might just be $100 — Is it ever just $100? Who taught this person the value of a dollar? — but there was no way the Athletics would ever win this year’s World Series.

Just two short months into the season, this World Series Athletics bet has already backfired in some of the worst ways:

If you want to be a brave (naive?) soul and follow this person into the betting abyss, the Athletics — who own baseball’s worst record by a comfortable margin — have +100,000 odds with DraftKings to win the World Series as we speak. Mind you, these are not odds I would take. I am merely sharing them for posterity as to the absurdity of the bet now and then. The Athletics are a terrible team from top to bottom. They are not worth your money!

Let me be absolutely clear there.

Given the Athletics’ recent fluctuating stadium issues, I have a hard time believing they will win anything of note any time soon. You’d have to be silly to bet otherwise. Honestly, I would just stick to online shopping splurges.
