CT state police respond to 100+ crashes at start of Memorial Day weekend

Connecticut State Police responded to 119 motor vehicle crashes — one that was fatal and 13 that resulted in injuries — on the Friday going into the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Between 12:01 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. on Friday, state police responded to the 119 crashes, including one where a person was killed in Greenwich and another where a motorcyclist was seriously injured in Middlefield, according to Connecticut State Police.

The department also had 1,640 calls for services and made seven arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, police said.

State troopers also issued 127 tickets for speeding, 68 citations for seatbelt violations and 251 more citations for hazardous moving violations, like unsafe lane changes or following too closely, police said.

A 48-year-old man from Cheshire was seriously injured when his motorcycle veered into the right shoulder and struck the metal beam guardrail while he was driving north on Baileyville Road in Middlefield just south of Route 66, police said.
