But it proved too much for BBC Two viewers at home that were left distraught by one scene.

A report was aired on Kingfisher birds that tracked their breeding and feeding process.

Beeb cameras got up close with one nest and followed a male and female who were snatching up to 100 fish a day from the nearby river to feed their offspring.

However, viewers watched as a heavy downpour hit the area causing vegetation along the river to stoop.

It blocked the parents from accessing the nest and feeding their starving chicks.

Eventually the kingfisher’s offspring starved to death, drowned or were forced to flee the nest for survival.

The scenes at home had viewers sobbing as they brand the episode a “tough watch”.

Writing on social media, one fan said: “Blimey, #Springwatch has been quite a tough watch this evening, the harsh side of nature very evident.”

A second wrote: “Very depressing Springwatch tonight. Could you spread out the bad news a bit please. Hard to enjoy any of what the presenters call the positives when you’ve been hit by successive deaths.”

“Nothing like some mindful moments after seeing chicks drowning and getting murdered,” said a third.

While a fourth commented: “Great show but also harrowing #Springwatch tonight.”

Springwatch continues on BBC Two and iPlayer.
