Maya Jama reveals Hollywood hunk is huge fan of Love Island and pulled her for a chat at Cannes
MAYA Jama couldn’t believe her luck when Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire pulled her for a chat at Cannes Film Festival – but it turned out he only wanted her for one thing.
Under sparkling lights at Vogue magazine’s exclusive bash, the Hollywood actor collared the Love Island host to get the inside track on his favourite TV show.
But far from being offended, it’s something the new host has swiftly become accustomed to.
Chatting at the Majorcan villa, Maya, 28, told The Sun: “I was sat next to Tobey Maguire, Spider-Man, the other day and he loves the show. He’s a big fan.
“Tobey and I were together at a dinner.
“He loved the show and he knew all the series and everything.”
Maya is back with rapper ex Stormzy, ending rumours she had been dating another of Tinseltown’s finest – actor Leonardo DiCaprio.
With a knowing laugh, Maya added: “It was an invited dinner, it wasn’t a personal one, just to clarify!
‘People are gonna recognise me in Tesco’
“You forget how many people watch it because it’s all over the world.”
Maya isn’t the first Island star Tobey has accosted, as 2021 beauties Millie Court and Lucinda Strafford revealed last year that the actor, 47, had approached them at Coachella festival.
Hilariously, ditzy Lucinda, 23, spent the entire chat mistaking him for England footballer Harry Maguire.
Maya added: “It’s just everywhere you go.
“When I first ever started telly, I was like 18, and I remember being like ‘my life’s changed and people are gonna recognise me in Tesco’.
“They didn’t! But being on Love Island definitely changed stuff for me.
“Before it would just be young people but now it’s nannas.
“I flew to New York recently and the woman at immigration wasn’t asking me any questions about why I was in the country, but instead everything that went down last series.”
Maya’s star has rocketed since she replaced previous host Laura Whitmore, 38, on the series.
In April, she became the face of beauty brand Rimmel. And dresses she wore in South Africa have sold out worldwide – the internet went wild for the £1,575 black cut-out frock she wore on her first night on the show, with many brands rapidly creating a cheaper version.
It’s meant all eyes will be on that first dress she chooses for her strut into the villa.
Maya said: “We’ve had meetings, because of the pressure of living up to the last series.
“The first outfit has cut out sections, that’s all I’ll tell you.
“I feel like that was a bit of a theme last year anyway, so it’s still cut-outy but I don’t know if I’ll do wet look again.
“We do it by episode, so the first looks are planned.
“What was making me laugh was all the dupes that came out, they are so fast, copying the outfits.”
Her wardrobe is now so integral to the Love Island brand, Maya’s team run real-life tests to ensure any dresses will work on camera.
The strong winds in South Africa caused problems on January’s winter series launch, tugging at the thigh-high split of Maya’s black gown.
She laughed: “I thought about that but it’s not as windy here! If I can survive that flippy-uppy dress I think I’ll be fine. We do practise walking in the outfits too, to check that.”
- Love Island begins next Monday on ITV2 at 9pm.
