The US asks Russia to discuss arms control without preconditions

The US wants to discuss arms control with Russia after the expiration of the START Treaty. The White House said that Washington also considers it necessary to involve Beijing in such matters, as it expects “a build-up of Chinese nuclear capabilities” over the coming time.

The U.S. wants to enter into a dialogue with Russia on a postSTART arms control architecture, Presidential National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said.

“Rather than wait for all bilateral differences to be resolved, the US is ready to work with Russia on how to manage nuclear risks and develop a post-2026 arms control architecture,” Sullivan said, speaking at the annual meeting of the Arms Control Association. “We are ready to begin that discussion,” the US administration official said.

Washington also considers it necessary to involve Beijing in such matters because it expects “a build-up of China’s nuclear capabilities” over the coming time, the White House spokesman said.

“So we are also prepared to engage China (in the nuclear arms limitation dialogue) without preconditions, so that the competition is controlled and does not lead to conflict,” Sullivan said.
