Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia has reached her first Grand Slam quarter-final, fighting back to defeat Sara Sorribes Tormo in three hours and 51 minutes at the French Open. Haddad Maia, ranked 14th, trailed 3-0 during the second set but rallied to emerge victorious 6-7 (3/7), 6-3, 7-5 against her Spanish opponent. Haddad Maia drew inspiration from Brazilian tennis legends Maria Bueno and Gustavo Kuerten, and will play world number seven Ons Jabeur of Tunisia in the quarter-finals. Bueno, who died in 2018 at the age of 78, reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon and semi-final of the US Open in 1968.
