I’m a hairdresser – we know if you’re lying about your last trim & can work out if you use a cheap shampoo in seconds
WE’VE all done it – you’re sat in the chair, under those intimidating fluorescent lights, and told a little white lie about when your last trim was.
Or you’ve promised to try the pricey products you were recommended, only to fall back on the £2.40 bottle you picked up in Boots.
But now a hairdresser has revealed that they can see straight through these fibs – and that it’s your hair that’s giving you away.
Gennaro Dell’Aquila, the owner of GA Salons with over 20 years of experience, said: “We’ve become quite familiar with some ‘hair-raising’ white lies from first-time clients.
“Phrases like ‘Oh, this is totally my natural hair color‘ or ‘Heat styling tools? Nah, I never touch ’em!’ tend to pop up from time to time.”
Now, speaking exclusively to Fabulous, he reveals the tell-tale signs that you might not be caring for your hair as you should – and the four common mistakes we’re all making…
SPLIT IT OUT
With a cost of living crisis and summer around the corner, a few of us might be bumping back our next appointment to save ourselves a bit of cash.
And while you think it might not make much difference, Gennaro claims that skipping those regular trims is easy to clock.
He said: “If I spot lots of split ends, it’s a sign that it’s been a while since their last trim.
“Regular trims help prevent split ends from getting worse and keep hair healthy.”
And it’s not just the ends that’ll grass you up either – but your entire head.
“I’ll notice how their hair looks and feels. Recently cut hair tends to be healthier, shinier and has more volume.
“If their hair looks dull and lifeless, it might be time for a trim to bring back that vibrant look.
“Or if it seems like their hairstyle has lost its shape and looks a bit messy, especially for shorter styles, it’s a good indication that they’re due for a haircut to get that fresh and tidy look back.”
CHEAPING YOURSELF
Apparently, it’s not just when you last had your hair cut that they can clock from a mile off – but also the quality of the products you’re using too.
Although that doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune on your haircare, explains the hairdresser.
Gennaro added: “It’s not always about the price tag. Some inexpensive products can be effective, while some high-end products might not live up to their claims.
“It’s important to understand your own hair’s needs and to research ingredients and product reviews before making a purchase.”
But what are the signs that your hair isn’t loving what you’re putting on it?
- Hair Damage and Breakage – “If you’re noticing an increase in hair breakage, split ends, or overall damage, it might be worth considering a switch to better-quality options.”
- Scalp Issues – “Low-quality products may contain harsh ingredients that can irritate your scalp and lead to issues like dryness, itchiness, or flakiness. If you’re experiencing persistent scalp problems, it could be worth investing in gentler and more nourishing products.”
- Product Build-up – “Some low-quality hair care products tend to leave residue and build-up on your hair, making it look dull and weighed down. If you find that your hair feels heavy, greasy, or difficult to style despite regular washing, it might be time for a change.”
FOUR SURE
But with so many conflicting ideas being shared on the likes of TikTok and Instagram, it can be hard to know exactly what we should and shouldn’t be doing.
Luckily, Gennaro has revealed the four most common mistakes his clients make – and probably you too.
Overwashing
“Washing the hair too frequently can strip away natural oils and moisture, leading to dryness, frizz, and scalp issues.
“Generally, washing every 2-3 days is a good starting point for most people.”
Overusing heat styling
“This can cause hair damage and breakage.
“Limit heat styling, use protectant spray, and choose lower heat settings when possible.”
Neglecting regular trims
“Regular trims, every 8-12 weeks, help maintain hair health, prevent damage, and make hair look better.”
Overprocessing with chemicals
“This can seriously damage hair and turn your luscious mane into a crispy disaster.
“Talk to a professional who can guide you toward healthy options and protect your locks.”
