The Athletics’ 7-game win streak was so improbable a bettor could’ve won $175K on a $100 bet
The Oakland Athletics have had a tumultuous season, to say the least. Beyond the terrible product on the field, fans in Oakland have begun “reverse boycotts” to show their animosity toward ownership and a seemingly pending move to Las Vegas.
But, somehow, the Athletics just rattled off a seven-game win streak where they took two of three from the Pittsburgh Pirates, swept the Milwaukee Brewers, and fell just short of a sweep of the league-leading Tampa Bay Rays. (Note: Even after winning seven straight games, Oakland still has the second-worst record in baseball).
No one in their right mind — except perhaps this overzealous World Series bettor — could’ve foreseen the Athletics having that kind of success over just about two weeks. Yet, if you did (please share your crystal ball with everyone in the class), you could’ve won $175,000 on a standard $100 moneyline bet.
Oh my goodness.
The Oakland A's have won SEVEN straight games, all as at least +150 ML underdogs:
11-2 at PIT (+244)
9-5 at PIT (+158)
5-2 at MIL (+215)
2-1 at MIL (+151)
8-6 at MIL (+176)
4-3 vs. TB (+230)
2-1 vs. TB (+175)A $100 ML bet rolled over would now be $175K

PHEW. I guess it really does pay off to believe in the biggest of unlikely underdogs, huh?
