Deadly dogs should be FIFTH breed added to UK’s banned list after spate of horrifying maulings, MPs say
A DEADLY dog should be the fifth breed added to the UK’s banned list after a spate of horrifying maulings, say MPs.
An urgent call for it to be illegal for Brits to own an American Bully XL was today heard in Parliament.
The dangerous beast has been responsible for multiple savage killings in recent months with one of the youngest victims being just one years old.
Senior Tory MP Sir John Hayes said the dog “bred to kill”, which is closely related to the banned Pit Bull Terrier, should also have legal restrictions.
Demanding action, he said: “Regretfully, the subject of dangerous dogs is salient again. Deep regrets of the most tragic events.
“Just last month, a 37-year-old man was killed in Greater Manchester.
“A 17-month-old, Bella-Rae Birch, killed last year. Just before that, a 10-year-old, Jack Lis.
“They were all killed by this so-called Bully Dog, the American XL Bully Dog.
“We need an urgent statement from the Government, not to debate this matter but simply to confirm that this bad breed, bred to kill, should be banned”
Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt added: “I think many people would be surprised to hear the volume of such attacks that do take place, and there has been a spate of them recently that have been incredibly shocking, and the result of owners not being able to control those animals.
“It is a very serious matter. I know the Secretary of State Therese Coffey is aware of these matters.
“As the next questions to her are not until July 6, I shall write on his behalf and make sure that the Secretary of State has heard it today.”
It comes after Bella-Rae Birch, one, was mauled to death by the family pet just one week after her dad bought it.
She was killed following the attack at her home in St Helens, Merseyside, in March last year.
Jack Lis, 10, was killed by an eight-stone dog called Beast in November 2021.
His mum recently told how she had to identify his body by a shoe following the savaging.
In August 2022, Ian Symes, 34, died from “catastrophic” neck injuries after a 52kg XL Bully dog, he bought on Snapchat, pounced on him.
And dad Jonathan Hogg, 37, was looking after the same breed of hound for a pal when it turned on him in a fatal attack.
Aniaml welfare experts previously blamed the UK’s dog mauling epidemic on lockdown “impulse buys” – as the rise in killer cases has more than doubled.
An RSPCA dog specialist believes that the increase in Brits buying puppies in the last two years could have caused the high rates of fatal dog attacks.
Reports from the Canine and Feline Behaviour Association show there has been a 54 per cent increase in dog attacks from 2020 to 2021.
BANNED DOG BREEDS
ALL four of these dog breeds were banned in the UK when the Dangerous Dogs Act came into force in 1991:
- Pit Bull Terrier
- Japanese Tosa
- Dogo Argentino
- Fila Brasileiro
