Rickie Fowler set the record for lowest round at a U.S. Open — Xander Schauffele tied it minutes later

0

Golfer Rickie Fowler defied the betting odds and posted the lowest round ever in U.S. Open history on Thursday with a 62 …but it got matched moments later by Xander Schauffele.

Fowler entered the day with +4500 odds to win the tournament. His phenomenal performance on the links at Los Angeles Country Club gave anyone who bet on him a major boost.

Fowler also came into Thursday with +5500 odds for becoming the first-round leader. The golfer sat at eight-under-par through 18 holes as the afternoon groupings began to tee off.

While favorites like Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm and Brooks Koepka were expected to perform well, it was Fowler who was looking like the star of this year’s U.S. Open so far — setting a record with 10 birdies.

Fowler’s absurdly good day turned shots even like this into birdies.

However, Schauffele immediately hit eight-under on his own and tied the record, making this one of the most competitive days on the green in U.S. Open history.

It was a stunning turn of events just 10 minutes later, as the two will now hold history for the tournament simultaneously.

While there is still plenty of golf left to play, Fowler and Schauffele look like they’ll go blow-for-blow as this year’s tournament continues on.
