Boynton pastor dies months after he was injured by hit-run driver at vigil

BOYNTON BEACH — A local bishop injured by a hit-and-run driver in December has passed away, according to activist and advocate Bryce Graham.

Bishop Bernard Wright was attending a vigil for 13-year-old Stanley Davis III on Dec. 26, 2022, when an 18-year-old reportedly struck Wright with his vehicle before fleeing the scene. Jamal Lormejuste, 18, of Lantana, was charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury and reckless driving causing serious bodily injury.

Wright was wrapping up a Facebook live just as the crash occurred. He suffered two broken legs, a broken ankle, and a broken wrist and was hospitalized for several weeks.

When speaking with CBS12 News, Bishop Wright said he was on dialysis three times a week and was on a waiting list for a kidney transplant.

No word yet if complications from the crash led to his passing.

The 2022 vigil was held to commemorate one year after Davis died in a dirt bike accident. Davis’ family is suing the city and the ex-Boynton Beach police officer, saying the officer violated Davis’ civil rights when he chased him on Dec. 26, 2021, ultimately leading the boy to crash his dirt bike and die.
