People support Trump because Democrats are worse | Letters to the editor

0

Your newspaper delights in publishing collections of letters to the editor, trashing anyone who’s not a rabid Trump hater, from people who are just that. Calling those with different views haters, or evil, does not endear them to your point of view.

Living in an echo chamber in South Florida, Democrats can’t fathom what has happened to their state or country. To where did the Florida Democratic bastion for decades disappear? They are at one with the pundits of Election Night 2016 who lost their smiles when they realized they weren’t going to celebrate Hillary Clinton as president-elect.

What they don’t get is, most Trump supporters are not what you see on TV. They are reasonably nice folks who just don’t see the world the same way as Democrats do. They probably don’t even like Trump as a man, but they look at what Democrats offer, hold their noses and back Donald as the least bad choice.

As long as Democrats spew vitriol on them and offer worse choices, they will not swing to the other side.

Conservative Democrats and liberal Republicans used to govern together from a consensus middle of the spectrum, and over time, things got done. Democrats have moved so far to the radical left that anyone who doesn’t follow their lead becomes a radical rightist in their view.

Read the indictment

This is going to be a very short letter. To all supporters of Donald Trump, who think they are patriots, or for any other reason support him, please take about 20 minutes and read the federal indictment.

A transgender crisis

I was having breakfast recently in Boca Raton with a friend, when a person sitting at a table next to us politely came over to us and stated he overheard part of our conversation about transgender politics in Florida.

He identified himself as transgender and was transitioning from a woman to a man, but his appearance was still mostly female. He shared with us how the current political climate in Florida caused him to be frightened for his personal safety for which he recently started counseling. We shared with him the fact that we are both psychiatrists, and that we, along with the medical and mental health community, are fully supportive of transgender rights.

It made us feel sad for his unfortunate and unnecessary predicament and angry at conservative politicians like Gov. Ron DeSantis, whose bigotry and lack of empathy foster this anti-LGBTQ hatred in our state.

MAGA’s true meaning

Gov. Ron DeSantis is mistaken. It is not the Justice Department that should be torn down. Rather, it is the Republican Party that needs to tear itself apart and restore itself to the founding principles of our democracy. It strongly appears that “MAGA” actually stands for Make America Go Autocratic.
