Angel City FC’s Alyssa Thompson selected to USWNT World Cup roster

Angel City FC forward Alyssa Thompson is among the 23 players selected for the U.S. Women’s national team roster for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

Thompson, who was the No. 1 overall draft pick in the NWSL draft, has made three senior national team appearances.

Also making the team is Bellflower native Savannah DeMelo. DeMelo, a midfielder with Racing Louisville FC, has yet to make an appearance with the national team.

Southern California products Ashley Sanchez (Monrovia, UCLA) and Trinity Rodman (Newport Beach), both from the Washington Spirit, are headed to their first World Cup.

The U.S. is going for a third consecutive World Cup title.

The U.S. will face Wales in a send-off game July 9 in San Jose. The first World Cup game is set for July 21 against Vietnam. The other group games are against Netherlands (July 26) and Portugal (Aug. 1).
