Marciello will share the GTD class #57 Mercedes-AMG GT3 with co-drivers Russell Ward and Indy Dontje this weekend at Watkins Glen – as Ellis, one of Winward’s full-time drivers, is unable to compete due to a “personal engagement” according to Winward Racing owner, Bryce Ward.
Marciello’s exploits at the wheel of a Mercedes-AMG GT3 need little exposition: He’s the reigning GT World Challenge Europe overall and Endurance Cup champion, the reigning ADAC GT Masters champion, and the reigning Spa 24 Hours champion – the latest in a growing list of accolades and accomplishments since joining the Silver Arrows as a full-fledged factory racer in 2018.
However, this will be just the fifth IMSA start for the lanky Swiss-Italian driver: He finished second in GTD at the 2021 24 Hours of Daytona, in his IMSA debut. At this year’s 24 Hours of Daytona, he raced in the LMP2 category with High Class Racing.
But while Marciello doesn’t have a great deal of experience racing in America, his last Stateside outing in a Mercedes-AMG saw him win the Intercontinental GT Challenge Indianapolis 8 Hour Race.
Winward Racing, Ward, and Ellis enter the weekend 13th in the GTD Teams’ and Drivers’ Championships respectively. They are eighth in the Michelin Endurance Cup drivers’ standings including third driver Dontje, and seventh in the teams’ table for MEC.
The German-American squad has retired from three of the first four races this season, with a best finish of fifth place in Long Beach.
