Similipal is a biodiversity hotspot and has the distinction of being one of the first nine tiger reserves declared under ‘Project Tiger’ in 1973. Similipal has attracted global attention for its unique melanistic tigers. Its landscape is not only important for its biodiversity but also as a source of water for three states — Odisha, Jharkhand and West Bengal. It is also one of the important carbon sinks of the world.
