Always Be Asterisk Beside Manchester City’s Success Believes Liverpool Legend
Manchester City became only the second English team to win the treble of the Premier League, the Champions League and the FA Cup last season, but their achievement has divided opinion.
Pep Guardiola’s side have won four of the last five Premier League titles and will be favourites to retain the title even before next season begins, with only Liverpool having offered genuine competition and stopped a clean sweep.
Aldridge feels Manchester City’s success has brought English football to the point of no return given the way they have achieved it.
He stressed that anything Manchester City achieve will always be seen with suspicion because of the way they have done it and insisted without the massive investment since 2018, they would have remained a small club.
Aldridge stressed that the legal tussles with the Premier League and the UEFA will forever hang over them as a dark cloud.
He wrote in his column for the Sunday World : “It feels like English football has reached the point of no return.
“Manchester City’s domination of the European game was confirmed as they clinched a place at the top table by finally winning the Champions League at the start of this month.
“And while you can admire the brilliance of their manager Pep Guardiola and the dream team he has put together, their success will always have an asterisk against it due to the methods they used to get there.
“Without the billions ploughed into the club by their owners from Abu Dhabi, City would still be where they were when I played against them in the 1980s and ’90s – a relatively small club with modest ambition.
“Their fans would say their rise has been a fairytale, but we all know there is another story.
“City did well to escape from a long list of UEFA charges for breaking Financial Fair Play rules a few years back, but now they are facing another 115 Premier League accusations of breaching financial rules.”
The legal tussle between the Premier League and Manchester City is expected to last for a few years as the Premier League champions continue to try and fight the proceedings in court.
If Manchester City are stripped of previous league titles it could see Liverpool, regularly runners-up, awarded them.
