‘Here we go’ – Fabrizio Romano reveals Spurs set for compensation after winger moves abroad

0

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur academy graduate Romain Mundle has agreed to join Belgian side Standard Liege.

The 20-year-old was offered a professional contract by Tottenham at the end of the season but has instead decided to pass on the opportunity to seek first-team football chances elsewhere following the conclusion of his deal.

The winger, who is comfortable on either flank came through the academy at Spurs but has yet to make his first-team debut and has already undergone his medical with Standard after reaching an agreement on a four-year contract.

Tottenham will be due some compensation for their part in developing the Edmonton-b0rn product, who travelled with the Spurs first team squad on a couple of occasions during the first half of the 2022/23 season,

Mundle was named on the bench at senior level for a second time in his career for the 1-0 FA Cup third round victory at home to Portsmouth as a late call-up after Yves Bissouma was injured in the warm-up and Oliver Skipp was promoted to the starting eleven.

Mundle will join Standard Liege

Romano said on Twitter: “After decision made to leave Spurs, 2003 born winger Romaine Mundle is set to join Standard Liège. Here we go.

“Agreement reached on four year deal until June 2027. Medical tests done now, then contract signing. Mundle leaves Tottenham on compensation.”

The Italian transfer expert had previously revealed on Twitter that Tottenham had offered Mundle a new deal until the summer of 2025, however, there was plenty of interest in his services with ‘several bids’ with Standard having now won the race.

Losing Mundle is a big blow for Tottenham, with the youngster being one of the brightest talents in the academy,  it is fair to see why he has decided to depart if his pathway to the first-team appears to be limited.

Under Totteham’s new academy chief Simon Davies and the appointment of Ange Postecoglou there has to be a focus on trying to create a conveyer belt for players to genuinely believe they can break into the senior side – the last player to do so on a regular basis was Oliver Skipp under Mauricio Pochettino.
