Carl Wheatle wins Italian A2 title and earns promotion

GB captain Carl Wheatle has led Pistoia Basket to promotion to Italy’s Serie A after defeating Turin 73-61 in Game 4 to claim the A2 championship with a 3-1 series win on Saturday June 17.

Wheatle did it on the eve of his 150th appearance for the club, finishing with nine points, nine rebounds and one assist as a starter, and was named to the All-Star Five of the Finals.

He finished the finals averaging 9.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and a steal per game, while shooting 45.1% from the field.

“Special Year… Special Ending – CHAMPIONS,” he wrote on Instagram after.

“Winning in front of my family made this one extra special. My teammates, my brothers, thank you for making this season so unforgettable, I love you guys.

“Thank you to the staff and the club for believing in me! And thank you to the fans who supported us all season, it’s been incredible.”
