Man Utd set to sign 16yo left-back from Championship club

Watford teenage sensation Harry Amass is on the verge of joining Manchester United, with the official announcement expected by the end of the week.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the 16-year-old left-back will put pen to paper on a four-year contract after the clubs struck an agreement over his move to Old Trafford.

United’s interest in Amass, who made his professional debut for the Hornets last January at the age of 15, dates back to earlier this year to March when they fought Chelsea for his signature.

The Londoners have set other priorities in the meantime, putting Man Utd in the driver’s seat to close the deal with the Vicarage Road outfit, and they’ve done just that.

However, after the Blues pulled out of the race for the England youth international, Erik ten Hag’s men have taken advantage of a clear path to sign one of the most talented defenders in the country.

Amass won silverware for England at the UEFA Development tournament in February, while his explosive rise to stardom at the Watford academy put him on the radars of several Premier League clubs.

Before joining the first team in January, he had long been one of the youngest regular starters in the Hornets Under-18s side under Charlie Daniels.

Though he’s unlikely to be a threat to Luke Shaw or Tyrell Malacia’s place in the Man Utd line-up at first, Amass comes in as an investment in the future, given his outstanding potential.

Shaw remains ten Hag’s favourite option on the right flank, although injuries to Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez toward the end of last season made him a reliable centre-back alternative.

His move to the heart of United’s defence ensured more game time for Malacia, who only joined Man Utd from Feyenoord last season after making a name for himself in his homeland.
