Steamers shutout Wampus Cats behind Bausas gem
Albemarle, NC – After a 4-hour trek across the state of North Carolina, Steamers starter Ben Bausas makes history on the hill.
The Edenton Steamers defeated the Uwharrie Wampus Cats, 5-0, Sunday afternoon, at Don Montgomery Park. The Clams won on the back of an 8.0-inning, 1-hit, performance from Bauses who led the way in the team’s second shutout of the season.
The right-handed arm from Chowan had his entire arsenal working against Uwharrie. Bausas held the Wampus Cats without a hit through the first 7.1 innings until right fielder Isaiah Martin reached on a single.
#1 in the teal and black became the first pitcher in over three seasons to carry a no-hitter into the 8th inning.
After the game, Bausas said his stuff felt “good” out on the mound and deferred to his defense for helping him out in the field.
Bausas’ final line, was a win, 8.0 innings, one hit, five strikeouts, one walk, and no runs. Bausas’ 8 innings pitched is the most by a Clams starter this season, surpassing Chandler Padgetts’ 7 against Tarboro and Outer Banks.
With the bats, the heart of the Steamers’ lineup was rejuvenated with the return of catcher Macon Winslow. After missing the past two games due to the MLB draft combine in Phoenix, the backstop reached base twice and drove in two runs on one base hit.
In the first inning with second baseman Luke Myers, and left fielder Ryan Kay on the bags, Winslow lined a single to center field to make the game 1-0.
In the sixth inning, Winslow plated another run with an RBI groundout to push the lead to 2-0.
The Hertford native now has 11 RBIs on the season which is tied for second only behind Gabe Kirck (15).
Edenton continued the offensive production in the later frames. The Clams tacked on two more runs in the seventh on a wild pitch and a base hit by Myers. In the eighth inning, Kirck brought another run across on a sacrifice fly.
In the last two games, the Steamers have scored 15 runs in the 6th inning or later. In the other 10 innings, the Clams have scored just 4 runs.
The Steamers will go for their fourth straight game in another PCL matchup against the Tarboro River Bandits, Monday night, in Tarboro. You can catch the game on the Tarboro River Bandits YouTube page.
