A VET has issued a warning to dog lovers everywhere to be alert to the dangers of an innocent item in their purse.
Consuming just a tiny amount could prove fatal and kill your pooch.
The caution from Dr. Matt McGlasson, DVM (@dr.mattmcglasson) was welcomed by canine owners.
Many said they were unaware that such an apparent harmless item could have such devastating consequences.
This TikTok vet has over 652,000 followers and another 27.8million likes, and makes a humorous claim on his platform: “Justice for kitten biscuit workers.”
But he was very serious when it came to pet care and his warning about sugar-free gum made many dog owners sit up and listen.
In his post, holding the cutest of puppies he said: “There’s something in your purse that can kill your dog.”
On the screen was a sign with the word danger highlighted, making no mistake about his warning.
He explained why owners should be on alert: “Sugar-free gum contains Xylitol. Just one piece could be fatal to your puppy.”
This was followed by a series of crying emojis. “Keep your furbabies safe. No gum for puppies,” he urged.
Symptoms of Xylitol poisoning to look out for in your dog include vomiting.
According to the US Food ad Drug Administration, dog owners should also be alert to other signs associated with the sudden lowering of a dog’s blood sugar.
These included weakness, staggering, incoordination, collapse, and seizures.
Owners were advised to take their dogs to the vet or animal hospital if they suspected anything amiss.
Commenters were grateful for the advice. “I didn’t know that thank you,” said one viewer.
Another rounded off the post with a promise to spread the word: “Thank you for the info. I need to tell many people,” they said.
