Hurricanes veteran J.D. Arteaga reportedly named Miami baseball coach

After more than two decades on the Hurricanes’ baseball staff, J.D. Arteaga will get a chance to run the program.

The long-time Miami pitching coach was named head coach on Monday, according to multiple reports. Arteaga replaces Gino DiMare, who stepped down after five seasons as the team’s head coach earlier this month.

Arteaga has been on UM’s staff for 21 years and has been the Hurricanes’ pitching coach since 2003, serving under DiMare and legendary coach Jim Morris.

As UM’s pitching coach, he has taught several MLB draftees, including recent picks Carson Palmquist, Alex McFarlane and Jake Garland. Under Arteaga’s tutelage, several Miami pitchers were named All-Americans, including Cesar Carillo, Chris Hernandez and Andrew Walters.

Before he coached in Coral Gables, Arteaga was a star pitcher for the Hurricanes. Arteaga, a UM Hall of Famer, played for Miami from 1994-97. He is the Hurricanes’ all-time leader in starts (73) and wins (43). He is fifth in program history with 343 strikeouts. Arteaga made the College World Series in four straight seasons as a player.

Miami retired Arteaga’s jersey No. 33 in 2003.

The New York Mets drafted Arteaga in the 26th round of the 1997 MLB draft, and he spent six years in the minor leagues. He reached AAA but retired from playing after the 2001 season.

Arteaga takes over a team that went 41-21 last season but was eliminated in the Coral Gables regional. The Hurricanes have been knocked out of the postseason while hosting regionals in back-to-back seasons. Miami, which has the second-most College World Series appearances of any program, has not reached Omaha since 2016.

Last season, Miami had a 5.07 team ERA, which was 68th in the nation out of 295 Division I teams.
