Pro-Life Atheist Becomes a Christian: “There is a God-Shaped Hole in My Heart”

Anyone who follows the pro-life movement closely probably has seen the face of Kristin Turner. A young and vocal pro-life leader, she often advocates for unborn babies outside abortion facilities, the U.S. Supreme Court and social media through her work with Pro-Life San Francisco and the Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising (PAAU).

But just a few years ago, Turner had very different views. According to the Catholic News Agency, she used to think abortion was “good for society,” and, until very recently, she was an atheist.

In a new interview with EWTN Pro-Life Weekly, Turner explained why she became pro-life and a Christian.

“There’s just many things that have brought me [to Christianity], but the main one has been seeing how necessary it is to sacrifice for these unborn children,” the 21-year-old told EWTN.

Turner said her views began to shift after a high school teacher sexually abused her and she thought she might be pregnant. When she began to research abortion, she said the facts that she learned made her rethink her pro-abortion position.

“I realized this act of violence against me is parallel to the act of violence committed against an unborn child who is not seen as fully human and whose body is not respected, and therefore can be violently violated,” Turner told EWTN host Prudence Robertson.

She said she felt the need to do something to help protect unborn babies from abortion, but “as a feminist … and as somebody who’s progressive and still is progressive, I thought there wasn’t a place for me in the pro-life movement.”

Undeterred, Turner said she began a pro-life group in college and later became involved in Pro-Life San Francisco, a group that does sidewalk counseling, legislative advocacy, research and more to expose the abortion industry and help save unborn babies and support mothers.

Today, Turner works as communications director for PAAU, a politically progressive pro-life organization that garnered wide-spread attention after finding the bodies of five late-term aborted babies and more than 100 first-trimester aborted babies at the Washington Surgi-Clinic in Washington, D.C.

Through her work, Turner recently had another change of heart. On May 29, she shared on Twitter about how she became a Christian and plans to join the Catholic Church.

“There is a God-shaped hole in my heart,” she wrote. “I have tried to fill it with everything under the sun. But that’s not possible. I need him as much as he wants me.”

While “a lot of small things” brought her to the decision, Turner said her pro-life advocacy was a big part of what drew her to Christ.

“It was really through that work and seeing how fruitful an act of sacrifice could be and how transformational an act of sacrifice could be that drew me into the church, and just seeing the sacrifice of Jesus and what he was willing to do to humanize, to help save our lives,” she said.
