'World of delusion': Worried Democrats warn complacent party of Trump's 'very real' chance of winning
Democrats confident that President Joe Biden can beat Donald Trump in 2024 are getting a warning from several inside the party: "You're living in a world of delusion."
Several party members have spoken out, alarmed by what they see as a sense of complacency in the party, NBC News reported.
Former Ohio Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan told NBC News that people who think Biden is a sure-win over Trump have their "head buried in the sand."
“You’re living in a world of delusion. And it’s dangerous," he said.
While conventional wisdom would suggest Trump's legal troubles would hurt his candidacy, several polls have suggested they've actually solidified his position as the GOP favorite.
Faiz Shakir, who ran the 2020 presidential campaign of Bernie Sanders, warned that Trump is a master at re-building himself to gain support.
“Trump is so amoral that he’s able to reinvent himself on issue after issue and deceive enough people to feel like they might give him a second look, at least in some critical battleground states,” he told NBC. “A lot of it hinges on, are there outside events that kind of prevent him from doing the reinvention?”
NBC noted that several polls show that Biden does not have a healthy lead over Trump or, in fact, several other GOP contenders.
"Biden’s approval rating, which fell to 35% in a Pew Research survey released last week, has been in the same territory as Trump’s during the run-up to the 2020 election. Coupled with a series of head-to-head polls that show Biden and Trump within the margin of error, that has given some Democratic strategists reason to believe Trump remains a very viable challenger to Biden," it reported.
"The worst is that we cannot forget what the actual consequence [is] of having a Trump presidency," Teran said.
