Porsche To Protest Watkins Glen Post-Race Penalty

Porsche Penske Motorsport will protest the penalty that saw its #6 963 dropped to the last in the IMSA WeatherTech race results at Watkins Glen after the car failed the post-race technical inspections.

The penalty would cost Mathieu Jaminet and Nick Tandy their second win of the 2023 season and first place in the points standings. It was handed to the team because “a skid block measuring less than the permitted minimum thickness during post-race technical inspection”.

The #6 duo were eventually classified 57th overall and asked to hand back their winning trophies.

“Following post-race inspection at Watkins Glen International, IMSA has penalized the #6 entry in the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen citing that the front skid wear of the No. 6 Porsche 963 was less than one millimetre outside the legal tolerance,” Porsche Penske Motorsport said in a statement last night.

“The rear skid wear was noted to be well within the legal tolerance. Porsche Penske Motorsport plans to collect all of the data and follow the protest procedures.”

The victory and accompanying silverware would go to the #25 BMW crew of Connor De Phillippi and Nick Yelloly, who eventually claimed the first GTP win for the M-Hybrid V8 as a result of the change in the results.

Meanwhile, Alex Sims and Pipo Derani now sit atop the IMSA GTP Driver’s Championship standings, with Jaminet and Tandy down to third behind De Phillippi and Yelloly who have risen to second.
